Malaysian banks on solid foundation [01-12-2011]

The country's banks remain on solid foundation with the risk-weighted capital ratio and core capital ratio improving to 15% and 12.9% respectively.

Bank Negara said in a statement on monetary and financial developments for October that this was mainly attributed to a planned capital raising exercise by a bank and half-year profit recorded by the industry.

“The level of net impaired loans remained stable at 1.9% of net loans, while the loan loss coverage ratio was sustained at a high level of 96.7%,” it said, adding that net financing to the private sector grew at a slower pace due to modest increase in outstanding banking system loans and net issuances of private debt securities.

The central bank said loans disbursed to the private sector remained high with loans to households continuing to rise, driven by loans for the purchase of residential and non-residential properties as well as cars.
